INTERMEDIATE WRITING OR HOW TO TAKE YOUR WRITING FROM GOOD TO GREAT
This class is for students who have had some writing experience or who have taken Herb Benham’s other class, “Zen and the Art of Writing.” Students will work on one or two pieces (personal essays, family histories, first chapter in a novel or the church newsletter— anything goes) and learn how to start a piece, set the hook and then reel their readers in. We’ll talk about how writing is related to music and how it must be read out loud to hear its beauty and catch its imperfections. We’ll have fun, and students may shed a few tears too. This class should make writing less painful. Maybe, even enjoyable. Class limited to 16 students

WRITING: CREATIVE WRITING

Learn the basic elements of fiction writing by creating unforgettable scenes, memorable characters, and realistic dialogue. You will write stories from different points of view and discover how journaling will inspire you and your characters. The workshop consists of lecture, in-class exercises, and short story assignments. By the end of the workshop, you will have several completed stories.

THIS IS AN ON-LINE CLASS. You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone for video conferencing. If you prefer, you can also use a home phone and have access to classes with audio only. All classes will be recorded and available to review at your convenience. Classes will be conducted on-line live via Zoom, a video conferencing platform. About a week before the course begins, you will receive an email with log-in instructions for the Zoom 'meeting room.' Zoom is a user-friendly conferencing platform, with the ability to create a live classroom experience.

Each week a different topic is covered as well as vital writing and analytical strategies and tools of rhetoric to take your memoirs beyond the “Dear Diary” stage and make them fascinating reading for generations to come.

Materials: A $5 fee, payable at the first class session, will be required for a tabbed binder, lesson handouts, writing notebook, and pen.
