PHOTOGRAPHY: MEMORIES, PHOTOS, AND REFLECTIONS

Do you take photos with your phone?  What do you do with them? With the access to good quality photos from our phones, many of us take photos regularly, but unlike during the 20th century, we rarely make prints. Instead, a few might be posted on social media, receive a few likes or short comments, and then disappear. Most are forgotten after the moment they are taken.

But what if we worked with these photos?  What if we used them to learn and grow from our world?  What if we used them to create a deeper sense of community by meeting with others and really sharing and learning from the content and form of our images?

During this time of Covid, when many of our interactions with others have been reduced, the photo or picture a day (PAD) process can be used to encourage mindfulness; through this class, we can create a context for connection with ourselves and with others.

In this course, you will consciously take at least one photo a day.  You will upload your week’s images into a grid which will randomize their placement.  You will be given suggestions as to how to “read” these grids that your life has produced.  With this information you will work on a “lesson” for your next week, whether it be paying attention to the photographic form of your images or the emotional and structural processes of your life. This might sound a little complicated, but we will have many conversations as I help you from everything from the zoom process, to the apps, to your activities. It will be fun!

PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTO EDITING AND STORAGE
Almost all photographs can benefit from a little "post processing." Whether it is cropping for a more effective image or doing basic corrections like toning light and dark areas, obtaining proper color balance and saturation, placing effects like text into your photos or even creating photo montages, digital imaging software opens new and exciting possibilities for you. In this class, you will learn how to "post process" your photos using the popular, free Pixlr online image editing program, as well as different methods of photo storage, from using external hard drives to storing photos in "the cloud" and retrieving them from anywhere you have an online connection. You will use several of your favorite digital photos to work on during our class sessions.
